PART 2
23
John tracked the huntersâ cars driving off through the heavy snowfall. Once they had vanished behind the abandoned factory, he sank to his knees. After several attempts, Ganiru had finally approved the photos of the âdeadâ FBI agent on the floor that John had posed as. The showdown had run deep and claimed its victims. Trevor was stashed in the trunk of the white Toyota, while his ex-wife was presumably in another vehicle elsewhere in the world. The bodies would be buried or hidden by other means.
Although Ganiruâs eyes had been resigned onscreen, John still wasnât sure he would be left in peace. The paranoid drug dealer might very well wake up one morning and decide to resume his pursuit of John. But it would presumably take a while and John intended to use that head start to build a new life in Berlin. The city was at least thirty times the size of Karlstad and it was far easier to stay under the radar there.
He thought about the little girl that the hunter in camo had torn from Minetteâs arms. What would happen to her now? Perhaps she would grow up as a mascot in one of Ganiruâs brothels, or maybe she would be left on the steps of a church.
John raised his gaze to the still-dark morning sky. Was there anyone up there watching over what happened down here on earth? His old man had dragged him to church on Sundays, but he had never talked about religion except as a collection of rules to be obeyed. John had inherited that mindset and hadnât reflected upon what faith actually involved. Until now. And right now, the idea of a higher power was downright repugnant. What kind of God allowed children to be orphaned?
First Nicole.
And then . . .
He didnât even know what Trevorâs daughter was called. His friend had never told him.
Now there were tears. They were running down his cheeks and John made no effort to wipe them away. He would always have the blood of Trevor and Minette on his hands, no matter how much he scrubbed them.
He lay down on his back and let his body sink into the fresh snow.
They were dead.
He was alive.
It was so tragic that his heart ached, but it was still better than the alternative. The sooner he accepted it, the better.
He got up and wrapped his arms around his body. The Chrysler was parked beside a couple of tall pine trees and had a couple of inches of snow blanketing the roof. The hunters had chucked him the keys and yelled that his gun was in the glove compartment before disappearing.
John got behind the wheel and opened the browser on his cell phone. He took care to browse incognito so that his internet history couldnât be saved. The website hosting the video still displayed the warning. The user only had one attempt left to insert the right code or the film would be made public.
His hand shook as he entered the eight digits.
